BURNHAM ON SEA’S FIFTH FREE FOLK FEST
THURSDAY 2nd to SUNDAY 5th SEPTEMBER

It’s Fab, it’s funky and by God, it alliterates. Burnham’s Fifth Free Folkfest will run between Thursday 2nd and Sunday September 5th. This year the fest is expanded to include the Thursday night at The Ritz Acoustic Club, with local musicians supporting Devon’s awesome ‘Dambuskers’. Charming, driven and powerful, wild man Steve Ruffe and his band pretty much guarantee a good time. Friday night brings the official opening concert by ‘Show of Hands’, not long ago voted Best Live Act in the county. They’ll be appearing with Miranda Sykes at The Princess Hall, Burnham on Sea and will no doubt delight the crowd with their smart mix of trad and contemporary, their fine melodies and sharp political commentaries. Come Saturday, it’s make your mind up time, with seven venues and over 70 acts you’ll have to set yourself a strict schedule, or simple wander blithely from surprise to joyous surprise. We have acts from all over, including the boisterous likes of Pyrates!, Hedgepig, Bag of Rats and Three Sheets T’Wind: the classy blues of Rick Payne; the intense brilliance of the FOS Brothers; the pure folk of Pamela Wyn Shannon, the Sea Kings and Scattered Few; the cool roots of Mississippi MacDonald and Stompin Dave Allen: The inspired mania of The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra, Lobby Lud and Green & Bushell. And a band called Boxcar Aldous Huxley. So much music, so little time.  Plus there’s free lessons in guitar, drumming and songwriting, plenty of Kids entertainment, Morris and clog dancers, a groovy market, buskers and, for those musicians who wish to join in, seessions at Dunstan House.  
The fest ends on Sunday with an afternoon in Manor Gardens, featuring more dancing, another market, kids stuff, bar ‘n’ burgers, plus more music including the superb songs of The Roots Union and the hilarious chaos of Hobo Jones & The Junkyard Dogs.
